Regulation of Hemp Cannabinoids in Wisconsin Food & Beverages

Stefan Boerboom, R.S.
Environmental Health Technical Specialist
Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection
Compared to states with established programs, Wisconsin’s hemp regulations remain relatively limited. However, the infusion of food and beverages with hemp-derived cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, is rapidly gaining popularity. This trend introduces significant challenges for both industry stakeholders and regulators, particularly as an expanding array of products is accompanied by occasional adverse events. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) will provide a comprehensive overview of potential food safety hazards and outline how existing regulations are applied to assess safety during the manufacturing of cannabinoid-infused foods and beverages.
