The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is governed by the FDA with the purpose to better protect public health by strengthening the food safety system. FSMA focuses on preventing food safety problems through prevention and risk-based food safety standards and regulations for human food, animal food and produce.
The FSMA rules are designed to make clear specific actions that must be taken to prevent contamination. FSMA requires that companies manufacturing, processing, packing or holding human food, animal food or produce establish and implement a food safety plan that includes an analysis of hazards and risk-based preventive controls. The rules set requirements for a written food safety plan that includes: Evaluating the hazards that could affect food safety; Specifying preventive steps or controls significantly minimize or prevent the hazards; Specifying how the facility will monitor these controls to ensure they are effective; Maintaining routine records of the monitoring; Specifying actions the facility will take to correct problems.
FSMA also holds imported foods to the same standards as domestic foods and directs the FDA to build an integrated national food safety system in partnership with state and local authorities. See when your facility needs to be FSMA Compliant.
